When one member of the family falls prey to one addiction or another, it is understandable that the entire family gets affected. Addiction tends to take a toll on the lives of everyone involved around the person who is actually an addict, be it the husband or wife of the affected person, children, office colleagues and everyone else who comes in contact.
Unfortunately, often the person affected is the last one to come to terms with it, and often does everything in their might to deny, refute or every attack attempts that are made towards seeking help. An addict almost always will never admit that he is one.
When we talk about addiction, people often mistake it with a habit. So an addiction is a typical behaviour that comes with a pattern and something that causes a negative impact on the person’s routine life.
We often believe that, addictions are about alcohol and drugs or products that are illegal. But that is not always the case. The recent trend now is about addictions to things that are easily available such as prescription drugs. There are many drugs in the market that are available on a prescription, which are actually meant for treatment of certain conditions, but when taken along with something else or used in another situation can give a person a drug like effect. This rising trend is an alarming new form of addictions. Let us check the various types of addictions and how they affect the people who fall prey to them.
Alcohol is something that is almost freely available all over the world. This substance when taken beyond a measure that the person can handle or when abused on a regular basis can end up getting the person physically and emotionally dependent on it. This is one of the commonest form of addictions that has ruined the lives of many. It is not uncommon to see an alcoholic who is unable to perform any of the daily chores or complete responsibilities, ending up losing jobs, or putting undue pressure on other members of the family.
There are various drugs and substances that are freely available and can be used recreationally. But again too much of everything is bad. So when these recreational drugs become an obsession, is where trouble starts to breed. Then again there are some extremely harmful drugs which are illegal, but are often acquired on sly, like heroin, cocaine etc. These substances are one of the most affected drug addictions. The ones using them are most often not in control of their senses, lose all sense space, time, responsibility and are simply unable to control their urge to abuse these drugs.
The people affected spiral down at a fast pace from where coming back tends to become a Herculean task. Drug addicts very often become social pests, as their addiction often leads to the breakdown of their families, relationships, losing jobs, then again needing more to buy these drugs. These people often end up becoming a social menace with their financial struggles and may also be rendered homeless. These are just some of the devastating effects drug addiction can have on a person.
Addiction of Prescription Drugs
The main takeaway when trying to figure out what trade is this – money is involved. Often, a lot of it!, depression or other psychiatric conditions. Drugs like benzo are one of the most commonly abused drugs. If you are wondering what is benzo? Then it is actually short for benzodiazepine. It is a psychoactive drug that is used as a prescription for conditions like depression, tremors, epileptic attacks and much more. But when this is taken with alcohol, it could be a potentially dangerous drug. Dependence of these drugs become faster as these are available on a prescription, and so acquiring them is not usually an issue.
Other types of addictions:
Gambling Addiction: This is yet another dangerous addiction which can take a huge toll of the finances of the person as well as their household. Gambling addicts often cannot control the urge to ‘try one last time’ and often end up in financial debts, rendered homeless and may even fall in legal troubles because of this habit.
Sex Addict: A sex addict is a person who has a compulsive need to have sex. Another variant of this could be those who are addicted to pornography. It may seem very funny to others but is actually a real problem for those affected. This addiction has the potential to destroy relationships, as the partners of those affected can feel various emotions like betrayed, abused, and devastated and others.
Very often those who are affected do not even realize these problems initially. It is only when they have spiralled down to a point or reached a point from when they cannot turn is where sometimes the realization starts.
It is often the members of the family or those who are affected who identify the problem and would attempt to take the person to seek help.
